19 killed in South African minibus crash


PRETORIA: At least 19 people were killed when a minibus taxi burst into flames after colliding with a truck in South Africa on Sunday, local media reported.

Four others were critically injured in the crash near Westonaria in Gauteng province, News24 said.

“The taxi apparently rolled multiple times and burst into flames,” said paramedic Chitra Bodasing.

The ubiquitous minibus taxis are frequently involved in accidents on South Africa’s deadly roads.

During the upcoming Christmas holiday season it is estimated that as many as 1,300 people could die in vehicle accidents - about the same number killed over the same period last year.

Nigeria President Buhari leaves Malta for France, joins world leaders at COP21


ABUJA – President Muhammadu Buhari was believed to have left Malta where he participated in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) for Paris, France Sunday evening to join about 150 other world leaders for the Conference of Parties 21 (COP21) on climate change.

The president is expected present Nigeria’s statement at the opening session today before participating in the launching of the International Solar Alliance same day, an initiative of Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

The alliance which is code-named the International Agency for Solar Policy and Application (InSPA) comprised all African nations located within the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.

Dele Momodu has written a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari asking him to as a matter of urgency fix Nigeria saying that Nigerians are lamenting that the change he promised is fast becoming a mirage and that Buhari’s style and methodology appear too slow.

The Serving Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Lagos, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said the incumbent administration in the country appears to be helpless in adequately tackling the multi-faceted challenges currently confronting the country.

Bakare, who spoke while leading the church congregation in a prayer session for the country in Lagos on Sunday, said the current situation in the country did not suggest that the government had a ready-made solution to the problems ravaging the country.

Undergraduate brothers wear suits, ties to rob Lagos pedestrians –Police


Two brothers are currently being held in a bizarre case of robbery, in which they were said to dress like corporate office workers to rob women at the close of work in Lagos.

The brothers, Ikenna and Chinedu Onukwo, who are 28 and 23 years old respectively, claimed to be students of the North American University in Benin Republic.

According to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, the siblings operated their robbery operations like a family business.

He said during the parade of the suspects that their modus operandi sets them apart from regular robbers because they dressed up like corporate office workers.

Beware: Boko Haram plans attacks on churches, mosques, markets, DSS warns


The Department of State Services, DSS, has alerted Abuja residents over plots by Boko Haram to attack churches, mosques and markets, using girls to bomb those places.

A memo by the Director of Security Services, Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Ibrahim, urged religious bodies to put their members on the alert.

The memo addressed to the National Presidents of Jama’atu Nasril Islam and the Christian Association of Nigeria asked residents to report suspicious elements around places of worship to the authorities.

KANO – The Kano commander of Shia movement in Nigeria, Muhammad Mahmud Turi, Friday, said 21 members of the sect lost their lives while 45 others were injured when a suicide bomber struck the procession at Dakasoye village near Kano.

Sheik Turi told reporters that the incident occured by 2.00pm shortly after a suicide bomber was caught by its vigilante group in the procession who confirmed that another bomber was in the midst of the procession.

Turi explained that the loose suicide bomber detonated his bomb at the point of been captured alive by the search team.

I will professionalise INEC – Chairman


The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said he will do everything within his powers to professionalise the activities of the commission.

He said he had seeing where elections were held in other countries and the identities of the chief electoral officers of such countries were not known.

He said that Nigeria must start moving in that direction.

Yakubu spoke in Abuja on Thursday when he received the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arkwright.

Herbalist abducts kids turns them to sex slaves


Two stolen kids that were rescued by the Cross River State Police Command on Thursday said they were made sex slaves by a herbalist, Emmanuel Akpan-Okon, who held them hostage for four years.

The kids, Esther Wisdom and Felicia Destiny, both aged 11, said in the four years that they were held hostage, the herbalist raped them almost every day.

Akpan-Okon (42) was arrested by the police following a tip-off that he specialised in the preparation of charms for armed robbers.

61-year-old sex worker,4 others arraigned over alleged prostitution


Lagos — A 61-year-old commercial sex worker, Theresa Odega, and four others, have been arraigned before an Igbosere magistrate’s court over alleged prostitution.

They were arraigned on Wednesday. The other defendants are Sandra Akomake, 58; Roseline Jebba, 43; Chika Okoro, 40 and Helen Ugwu, 33 and are facing a count charge on prostitution, preferred against them by the Police.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Nicholas Akeene, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on November 24, 2015.

14-year old Pupil collapsed after rape by 60- year-old Lagos landlord


Racheal (pseudonym) gave residents a scare after she collapsed in the passage of her parents’ rented apartment in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the 14-year-old girl almost died after she passed out a few minutes after being allegedly raped by her parents’ landlord, identified only as Christopher.

The prompt response of residents of Fasanya Street, where the incident happened, however, averted a tragedy.

Our correspondent learnt that among those who came to her aid was Christopher, who pretended as if nothing happened between them.

Fayose to Buhari: Tell Nigerians who the looters are, how much they returned

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, on Thursday, berated President Muhammadu Buhari’s claim that many of those who looted the public treasuries in the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan had started returning the stolen funds to the government, saying the President should rather stay at home to govern the country instead of junketing around the globe and acting like a saint before the international community.

In a statement issued in in Ado-Ekiti by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose challenged President Buhari to tell Nigerians how much was returned and the looters who returned the stolen funds, adding that “Since the purported looted funds belong to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it ought to have been paid into the Federation Account and shared by the Federal, State and Local Government.”

Nigeria Ranked 3rd Most Terrorized Country In The World


The 2015 Global Terrorism Index, GTI, has ranked Nigeria as the third most terrorized country in the world.

Of the 162 countries of the world that have been worst hit by terrorist attacks, Nigeria, in the latest ranking, follows Iraq and Afghanistan, who were ranked first and second respectively.

Pakistan and Syria are ranked fourth and fifth to complete the top five most terrorized countries. Somalia and Libya occupied the eighth and ninth positions respectively.

Three officers of the Nigeria Police Force arrested for collecting dead officer's claims


An Assistant Superintendent of Police, a female inspector and a corporal are currently being detained by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly collecting the insurance claims of dead and non-existent policemen.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the arrested officers, who are attached to the insurance section of the command, had allegedly swindled the Force by collecting the claims of policemen which reportedly ran into millions of naira.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspects, whose names had yet to be ascertained, were arrested by the X-Squad Section of the command on Monday, November 10, after a petition reached the police authorities that families of some dead policemen had yet to get the claims.

Explosive materials detected in a US bond parcels at Cairo International Airport


Two DHL parcels containing explosive materials were seized at Cairo International Airport before making their way to the US through London, an official told Aswat Masriya on Tuesday.

The source at the airport said that the parcels, weighting about 10kg, were going through security procedures when the explosive substances were detected by the X-Ray scans.

The two parcels underwent further examinations which confirmed the existence of explosives.

The official said that the parcels have been put under heavy security until authorities can identify their owners.

FG begins construction of 150 houses in Akure


The Federal Government has commenced the construction of 150 houses in Akure, the Ondo State capital through the National Housing Fund to alleviate the problem of inadequate affordable shelter for the residents of the state.

The project, which comprises two and three-bedroom flats, is being handled by Meadville Building and Construction Company, and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2016.

Speaking at the commencement of the project, the state Controller of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Mrs. Mojisola Gbadebo, explained that the project was being sponsored by the bank in collaboration with the Federal Housing Authority.

75-year-old, others arrested for stealing meters, vandalising transformer


A 75-year-old man, Hassan Usman, has been arrested for allegedly tampering with a transformer in the Ikosi, Ketu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Usman had allegedly taken advantage of power interruption in the area on October 28 and tampered with the transformer belonging to the Ikeja Electric. He was reportedly caught in the process.

Two other suspects – Uzor Ayanwu and Peter Estamen – were also paraded alongside the septuagenarian on Friday at the Lagos State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, for stealing electricity meters.

Aunt tortures toddler to coma for defecating


The police in Lagos have arrested a housewife, Grace Monday, for allegedly torturing her three-year-old niece, Miracle Peter, to a coma.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Monday allegedly flogged the victim for several hours at their home in the Ireodun, Agege area of Lagos State and subsequently slammed her head against a wall causing the toddler to faint.

The offence of the toddler was that she always messed up the room with excreta.

Our correspondent learnt that Monday had been married for seven years without a child and had travelled to Kaduna sometime in July, 2015, to get the victim from her elder brother.

Man, 30, rapes 11-year-old girl


LAGOS—Police in Lagos have arraigned a 30-year-old factory worker, Peter Ekom, before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ikeja for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl (names withheld).

The defendant was docked before Magistrate B. O. Osunsanmi over the offence allegedly committed on November 3 at 43, Ariori Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos.

Ekom is facing a count charge of rape made against him by the police.

According to Mr. Kingsley Eboh, husband to the victim’s aunty, Mrs. Elizabeth Eboh, the suspect got hold of the victim when she returned from school and was undressing, then forcibly penetrated her and warned her not to tell anybody.

Woman bathes husband with hot water over breakfast


LAGOS—Last Thursday morning at Gbagidi, Ijanikin area of Lagos State, a housewife known as IyaDeborah, reportedly emptied a bowl of hot water on her husband, identified as Ajagadi.

Iya Deborah had complained bitterly after her husband gave her N700, out of the N800 he had, to prepare yam and sauce breakfast for the family. She bought the yam, but emptied the boiling water on her husband, who was fiddling with his phone in the sitting room, waiting for his meal.

The couple have been married for eight years, has four children, including a six-month-old baby.

40 countries funding Islamic State – Putin


Russian President, Vladimir Putin said on Monday that funding for the extremist group Islamic State comes from sources in 40 countries, including several members of the G20.

These undisclosed countries need to do more to prevent such funding as well as the sale of oil and other resources by Islamic State, Putin said.

“I provided examples based on our data on the financing of different Islamic State units, by private individuals.

Africa's richest man resigns as member of the board


Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote and three other directors resigned from the board of Dangote Flour Mills on Monday as majority owner Tiger Brands cut funding support to its struggling Nigerian division.

South Africa's Tiger Brands said it was "currently exploring various alternatives with regard to its investment in Dangote Flour Mills, which also announced a change of name to Tiger Branded Consumer Goods Plc.

Aliko Dangote holds 10 percent of the company's equity in through Dangote Industries. The other directors who resigned are Olakunle Alake, Asue Ighodalo and Arnold Ekpe.

President Muhammadu Buhari has given reasons why those alleged to have stolen government funds in the past are yet to be prosecuted.

President Buhari cautioned INEC and police not to repeat past mistakes


ABUJA—President Mohammadu Buhari has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the Nigerian Police against giving in to undue pressure from some unscrupulous politicians to taint the integrity of elections.

Buhari gave the warning at a meeting he held with INEC officials and authorities of the Nigerian police.

It will be recalled that opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, last week raised alarm over the meeting between the president and the institutions, alleging suspicions.

NYSC discovered seven workers with fake certificates


The National Youth Service Corps has discovered seven persons who have been working with fake NYSC Certificate of Exemption and Exclusion.

Three out of the suspects who are currently using the certificates to work in some banks are said to be on the run.

But the remaining four suspects with fake NYSC Certificate of Exemption and Exclusion had been handed over to security agencies for prosecution.

ISIS: Nigeria Immigration deploys electronic devices to nab terrorists


As part of the worldwide manhunt for suspected terrorists, the Nigerian Immigration Service has deployed an electronic device in the nation’s airports to identify, take a headcount of travellers and aid security agencies to arrest suspected terrorists.

The technology, known as Electronic Advance Passenger Information System, is a web-based application that facilitates the collection of electronic manifest information for international travellers, going into or travelling out of the country.

The NIS Public Relations Officer, Ekpedeme King, disclosed this to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday while responding to enquires on efforts by the service to beef up security in the nation’s borders against the backdrop of the ISIS attacks on Paris on Friday, where no fewer than 128 people were killed.

Robbers attack Lagos police station, sink gunboat


Armed robbers on Sunday stormed the Marine Police Post of the Lagos State Police Command in the Epe area, exchanging gunfire with the policemen.

During the attack, the robbers attempted to steal the station’s gunboat and other ammunition.

Our correspondent learnt that the robbers, said to number about 20, came in a speedboat to the Marine beach at about 12.30am.

It was gathered that policemen from the Epe division, the Rapid Response Squad and the Counter-Terrorism Unit, were mobilised to the scene to repel the attack.

#ParisAttacks: IS threatens France in video



Cairo - Islamic State released an undated video on Saturday threatening to attack France if bombings of its fighters continue, a day after gunmen and bombers left at least 128 people dead and 99 critically injured in Paris.

The group's foreign media arm, Al-Hayat Media Centre, made the threat through a militant who called on French Muslims to carry out attacks.

“As long as you keep bombing you will not live in peace. You will even fear travelling to the market,” said the bearded Arabic-speaking militant, flanked by other fighters.

Suspected Child traffickers arrested in Delta by SARS


Suspected child traffickers recently arrested by the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) at the Delta State police command said they engage in the business to assist pregnant girls including married couples who don’t have children.

SARS rescued five children suspected to have been sold by members of the group who operate within Delta, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa-Ibom and Rivers state.
The suspects said:
“We sold babies between 1-5 years of age to those who have been married for several years without children. Some of us are nurses and supportive members of staff of health institutions.We do not know how the police got wind of our illicit businesses while we were operating in Asaba and Onitsha. In most cases, a child costs between N250,000 to N500,000 while grown-up ones are sold for N1m.”

Dead bodies littered the streets of the French capital after terrorists killed at least 11 in a shootout in a Korean restaurant on the Rue Bichat. I mistakenly killed my schoolmate – Suspect


A murder suspect, Saka Ahmed, who allegedly killed his schoolmate, 19-year-old Saheed Jimoh, in front of their school gate in the Ijora area of Lagos State, has said he committed the act after a prank went awry.

Ahmed, 19, claimed he had joked that a teacher was coming after them, after they both arrived late to school.

He said the prank angered the victim, adding that he (Jimoh) attacked him and it was during a brawl he pushed him.

How breast-feeding exposed baby factory syndicate


LAGOS — Plans by a 25-year-old mother of four to sell a one-week-old baby boy, who was stolen in Onitsha, Anambra State, to a barren woman in Lagos, has been botched and the suspect arrested.

It was her inability to breast-feed the baby that set off the alarm, which led to her arrest and subsequent confession.

The suspect, who claimed to be a farmer and an apprentice in Onitsha, said she was on her way to hand over the baby to the buyer at Cele Bus Stop, along the Oshodi/Apapa Express-way, when she was arrested.
