Nairobi - Kenyan police on Tuesday released names and pictures of two wanted terror suspects who are on the run after slipping through a police dragnet in the coastal city of Mombasa Monday evening.
Security officers in Mombasa are said to be in panic following the disappearance of the suspects who were identified as Mahmoud Salim Mohamed, and his accomplice Hussein Omar Said.
Police spokesman George Kinoti said the security officers carried out the raid on Mohamed’s house on Monday, but the terror suspect was not there.
The officers recovered a G3 rifle, an M4 rifle, 345 bullets, 15 mobile phones and a laptop.
Kinoti confirmed the raid and the recovery of the deadly arsenal, saying the operation happened following intelligence of their planning a terror attack.
According to police, Said has been in the police list of most wanted criminals, and his name and photo were circulated by the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett late last year.
He is suspected of playing a pivotal role in the June 2014 Mpeketoni attack in Lamu county that left close to 60 people dead.
Sources said a team of detectives is in Mombasa to pursue the terrorists.
Security officers had last week warned that several terror suspects had sneaked into the coastal town and were targeting one of the malls within the city.
The terror attempt comes at a time when the security operation to flush out Somali al-Shabaab militants from Boni Forest in Lamu County has been extended to cover four key areas: Pandanguo, Bothei, Pangani and Witu.
