NAFDAC fine Guinness Nigeria Plc N1bn for violating rules


LAGOS — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, was said to have slammed a fine of N1 billion administrative charges on Guinness Nigeria Plc for its failure to adhere to the recommended good manufacturing practice procedures.

A source from the Enforcement Department of the agency, who pleaded anonymity, told Vanguardthat the agency had conducted a routine check on the company’s factory in Ikeja, Lagos on November 5, 2015 where shocking revelations were made.

According to the source, the NAFDAC team came back with unsatisfactory appraisals about how some of the materials used in the production processes were being handled.

David Cameron urged to raise ban on homosexuality with Indian PM


Calls have been made for Prime Minister David Cameron to raise the issue of the re-criminalisation of homosexuality with the Indian Prime Minister.

Homosexuality was re-criminalised in Indian in 2013, when Section 377 of the country’s Penal Code was reinstated.

Writing to David Cameron was Subodh Rathod, Programmes Manager for Wise Thoughts, a North London based art organisation promoting arts, films, dance classes and LGBT services in Haringey.

3 GUNMEN OPEN FIRE ON CHURCH IN EGYPT, NO ONE KILLED



CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's official news agency says gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a church near Cairo, setting off a gunbattle with police. No one was killed.

MENA news agency said the three attackers escaped after the firefight Thursday. It said police guarding the evangelical church near the Giza pyramids were left with scrapes and bruises.

Attacks on churches and Egypt's Christian minority have increased over the past decade as tensions, sometimes exacerbated by officials, grew with the Muslim majority.

Supreme Court Orders Stay of Proceedings on Saraki's Case


The Supreme Court of Nigeria has ordered a stay of proceedings in the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Dr. Olubukola Saraki, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on allegations of false asset declaration.

The trial initiated by the federal government against Saraki was put on hold pending the hearing and determination of his appeal challenging the legality of his trial at the CCT before the apex court.

At the hearing of Saraki's application for stay of proceedings, counsel to the federal government, Rotimi Jacobs, who had earlier objected to the application for stay, made a dramatic turnaround in telling the court that he will sign an undertaking to not proceed with anything with regard to the case at the CCT "once the Supreme Court can grant accelerated hearing in the pending substantive appeal."

I was under the influence of evil spirit —Man, 50, who raped 2-yr-old girl


Uyo—A 50-year-old man, identified as Okon Michael, has said that he raped a two-year-old girl while under the influence of an evil spirit.

Michael, who spoke to journalists yesterday while being paraded at the Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan, Akwa Ibom State, is an indigene of Mbak Ekpe in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.

He was paraded alongside other suspects arrested for offences, ranging from illegal possession of firearms, Indian hemp to armed robbery and theft.

Sergeant allegedly rapes neighbour’s 9-yr-old daughter


LAGOS—OFFICERS of Edo State Police Command are investigating a sergeant, Umoru Babalola, who allegedly raped a nine-old-girl (names withheld).

It was learned that Edo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, ordered the arrest of the sergeant, following a report from the girl’s mother that the policeman, who was her neighbour, allegedly lured her daughter, a primary four pupil, and raped her in his apartment.
She said: “I came home and was told that Sergeant Umoru sent my daughter to buy him recharge card. 

Police Paraded 400L student of Ladoke Akintola University for rape and robbery.


The Police Commissioner in Oyo State paraded a male student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, who allegedly broke into female hostels, raped and stole their properties.

About a week ago, students of the institution protested on major roads in Ogbomoso, calling on the police to check raping of female students in their hostels.

Asked why he took to breaking into female hostels, the 400-level student of the Department of Transport, said he only stole laptops and other items.

8 people killed in militant attack in Egypt

  

CAIRO, NOV 12: At least eight members of a family, including a child, have been killed and one injured in an attack by unknown militants in Egypt’s restive north Sinai province.

“The attack on the family happened yesterday when masked militants attacked their house. Eight people were killed and one person was severely injured,” Abdel Fattah Harhor, North Sinai governor said.

“The militants planted bombs in a car parking area near the house that had six vehicles,” security sources said.

Residents of the neighbourhood described the explosion as huge.

Man held for robbery day after leaving prison


The Oyo State Police Command has arrested 39-year-old Segun Adeleke for allegedly robbing a motorcyclist in Oyo town.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Adeleke had served two separate jail terms and his latest arrest came a day after he completed a five-year jail term.

According to police authorities, he was released from prison on November 4, 2015 and allegedly committed robbery the following day.

Germany Offers to Support Nigerian Military in War against Terror


The Federal Republic of Germany has promised to offer more support to the Nigerian military in its ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts, especially against Boko Haram in the North-eastern part of the country.

This support was conveyed Wednesday when a German Advisory Team in charge of military equipment and programme aid paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin, at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Abuja.

The Team Leader, Col. Thomas Brillisauer, said the aim of the visit was to discuss new areas of support in the fight against insurgency in the country.

I made N3, 000 daily vandalising pipelines – Driver


A commercial driver, Jide Falayo, who was arrested by the police in Lagos State, has said he was paid N3,000 daily to transport fuel from vandalised pipelines for distribution.

Falayo added that he conveyed the products from Ijedodo and Ijegun to the Isolo area of the state.

Falayo said this while being paraded alongside 11 other suspects.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspected vandals, who included a married woman, were arrested by the Inspector-General of Police Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism in the Ijegun area of Lagos last Friday while acting on a tip-off.

South African police jailed for murder of taxi driver Mido Macia


A judge has sentenced eight South African policeman to 15 years in prison for the murder of a Mozambican taxi driver.

Mido Macia was killed in 2013 when officers tied him to the back of a police van by his arms before driving off.

He was found in a pool of blood in police custody.

Judge Bert Bram called the incident "barbaric" but acknowledged that it was not premeditated.

Corrupt Custom Officers To Get 10 Years Jail Term – Hameed Ali


The Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), has warned that any Customs officer caught in corrupt practice, would be jailed for a maximum of 10 years as prescribed by law.

“The minimum jail term for corrupt officers is five years, but I will make sure that any officer found to be corrupt gets the maximum jail term of 10 years.

“This is to serve as a deterrent to any officer who finds himself in the Customs to make money and not to earn money.

Fielding Jonathan for presidential poll an error – PDP

 

The Peoples Democratic Party has asked Nigerians to forgive the party for its inability to meet their yearnings in the past 16 years.

The party also said that fielding former President Goodluck Jonathan as the PDP candidate for the 2015 Presidential election was an error. It added that the party was aware that Nigerians were angry with it because of some actions it took when it was in power.

The PDP said it was ready to mend fences and this was why it was organising a national conference where all issues affecting the former ruling party would be discussed.

Man tries to circumcise 6years old nephew


Pretoria - A 6-year-old Soshanguve child is recovering at his mother’s house after his uncle allegedly tried to circumcise him with a razor.

The 6-year-old, who is disabled and can't walk or use his hands, was left in the care of his uncle while his mother went to fetch water. While retrieving the water, the mother said she heard her child scream.

"When I tried to get into the house, I found the door locked," said the mother.

"I broke the window and told him to give me the child because he was refusing to open the door."

Five-year-old girl accuses father’s friends of rape


A five-year-old girl has accused five of her father’s colleagues of rape. The victim, it was learnt, was allegedly raped alongside her three-year-old sister.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victims and their father, Ayodele Ekundayo, who is a driver at a cement factory, lived in the same compound with the suspects who all work in the same company.

It was learnt that the company, which is located in the Fagba area of Lagos State, provided accommodation for its employees.

It was learnt that the suspects – John Mahansi, Taiye Ojo, aka Ejima, Deji Adenekan, aka Orobo and Peter Irobo, aka Apako, are between the ages of 24 and 33.

‘We're going to die if there's no rain’- Residents cries out


Rustenburg - Residents in Rustenburg and surrounds are buckling under sweltering heat which has much of the North West province in a suffocating grip.

“It is too hot, I have never experienced or heard of this extreme heat. We are going to die if there is no rain in the coming days,” said Angela Moeketsi, 45, from Kanana outside Rustenburg.

The South African Weather Service said extreme heat was expected over the northern and north eastern parts of the province until Wednesday – with no rain in sight.

Rustenburg saw a maximum temperature of 38 degree Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday, while in the Pilansberg area in the Moses Kotane municipality the mercury was set to rise to 41 degrees.

Deposed Akure monarch returns, challenges deposition


Five years after his dethronement and banishment by the Ondo State Government, former Deji of Akure, Prince Adesina Adepoju, arrived the city on Tuesday amidst jubilation from his family, friends and associates.

Adepoju, who hails from Osupa Ruling House, was dethroned and banished for six months by the state government on June 10, 2010 following a free-for-all that ensued between him and his late wife, Bolanle. The state government had described the action as an embarrassment to the stool of Deji of Akureland.

After his removal, Oba Adebiyi Adesida was enthroned as the new Deji in August, 2010 but he died on December 1, 2013, after a brief illness.

Buhari slashes federal ministries to twenty five


AHEAD of Wednesday’s (today) inauguration of 36 ministers-designate, there were indications on Tuesday that President Muhammadu Buhari, had reduced the number of federal ministries to 25 from about 29.

Under the new dispensation, the ministries of police affairs, aviation and special duties appear to have been scrapped while ministries of Lands, Housing, Urban Development and Works have been merged to become Ministry of Works and Housing. Also, the information, culture, national orientation and tourism ministries have been collapsed into one Ministry of Information and Culture.

Also, the Ministries of Sports as well as Youth Development have also been merged to form Ministry of Sports and Youth Development.

Graduate slips into gutter, drowns after downpour


A graduate of Business Administration, Ire Polytechnic, Osun State, Yinka Talabi, has drowned after he slipped into a gutter on Ikotun road, Ikotun area of Lagos.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the Epe, Lagos State indigene, had on Friday afternoon gone to a branch of First Bank of Nigeria Plc, to withdraw some money.

The victim, who was married with children, was said to be returning home when there was a downpour which flooded the road.

As the victim attempted to jump over a gutter, one of his legs was said to have been trapped.

A kidnapper caught after 16 YEARS on the run - on holiday in Lanzarote


A man who escaped jail 16 years ago is back behind bars after he was caught on holiday in the Canary Islands.

Spencer White absconded from HMP Ford in July 1999 after being sentenced to three years for kidnapping an adult.

But on September 19 this year, the 39-year-old was stopped by police as he arrived at Lanzarote airport after being recognised as wanted on a European Arrest Warrant.

Police believe he has been secretly living in southern Ireland since disappearing 16 years ago.

That decision was, however, tempered following pleas at a closed door session between Gbajabiamila and some principal officers of the House in the speaker’s office.

Policeman commits suicide for missing assessment exam


LAGOS—There was pandemonium, yesterday, at the Police Training School, Ikeja, Lagos, following the discovery of the lifeless body of Corporal Agi Elias inside his car.

It was gathered that the policeman, attached to Safer High Way Patrol, reportedly committed suicide at about 8p.m, Monday, after he missed an assessment exam held at the training school.

Empty cans of pesticide and some tablets, suspected to have been taken by the deceased, were reportedly found inside the car.

RAPES: Lagos Records 14,000 Cases Of Sexual Violence


Lagos State government yesterday said it had recorded and handled no fewer than 14,166 sexual and domestic violence cases across the state in the last eight years.

Director of the Office of Public Defender, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi who made the disclosure while speaking at the 2015 Press Week organised by the Lagos State Governor’s Office Correspondents, (LAGOCO), expressed worry about the growing menace in the society.

She tasked the media to uphold the ethics of privacy and confidentiality while reporting sexual violence issues, saying most victims are exposed to stigmitisation through exposure by the media.

Four Lagos poly lecturers arrested for exam malpractice


The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four lecturers of the Lagos City Polytechnic, Ikeja for their alleged involvement in examination malpractice in the institution.

Our correspondent learnt that the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, arrested the lecturers last Thursday and detained them for about three days before releasing them on bail.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, a deputy superintendent, who confirmed the arrest, noted that the police only released the lecturers on bail, as investigation into the matter was still ongoing.
