Army says era of harassment of civilians by Military men is over

The era of harassment of civilians by military men in uniform is over, Brig.-Gen. Nicholas Rogers, Head, Civil/Military Affairs, Army headquarters, has declared.

Rogers made the declaration on Monday in Yola during an interactive session with stakeholders, including NGOs and religious organisations in Adamawa.

He said the military, under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and leadership of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. – Gen. Yusuf Buratai, was committed to professionalism.

“The era of harassment, beating, living above the law is over. The military must respect the constitution.

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has said only Nigerians are in the position to say why the party was rejected at the poll during the last general elections.

It said the rejection of the party was still a surprise despite the achievements it claimed the party recorded in the last 16 years, during which it was in control of the Federal Government.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, stated this at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.

He was speaking on the 17th anniversary of the formation of the former ruling party.

Probe: Jonathan Holds Meeting With Ex-Ministers

 
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has met with some members of his cabinet in a bid to defend his integrity.

He was said to have told the former ministers that he was “not a thief in office as being portrayed”.

He explained how he met President Muhammadu Buhari for 20 minutes on two issues.

They are: advising Buhari against subjecting his person and former cabinet members to “media trial” on alleged corruption and; why the Election Petition Tribunals in Rivers and Akwa Ibom should be allowed to work unhindered.

He deplored what he called the involvement of the Department of State Security Service(DSS) on election-related matters in the two states.

Africa’s richest man Dangote plans Zimbabwe investments

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, said Monday that he planned mining and power generation projects in investment-starved Zimbabwe as well as to set up a large cement factory.

Dangote met with President Robert Mugabe in Harare in a rare sign of possible foreign investment for Zimbabwe, which has been in economic decline for more than a decade.

“We had a very, very good meeting with the president and I told him that we have already decided to invest in three areas, one is power, second one is cement and third one is coal,” Dangote told journalists.

“We have already made up our minds to invest and so we are here and we will invest.”

Masquerades invade church, flog pastors, worshipers

A Church service was reportedly disrupted by four masquerades who flogged the pastors and the worshipers in Epinmi Akoko area of Ondo state.

One of the masquerades, Tunde Arohunmolase was however arrested while others fled after flogging the pastors and the worshipers.

Police source said that the masquerades invade the Christ Apostolic Church in the town while the service was on-going and abruptly ended it.

Two of the Pastors were reportedly injured by the time the masquerades left the church premises.

Fayose: Buhari Gradually Cornering Nigeria for Northerners

Following perceived lopsided appointments alleged to have been skewed in favour of the Northerners by President Muhammadu Buhari since assumption of office, Governor Ayodele Fayose has branded him as being too pro-north, an action he described as unpatriotic and wicked.

Fayose stated that the steps taken by the president since May 29, 2015, had tainted Buhari as an ethnic and tribal jingoist, which he said is inimical to the unity of Nigeria.

The governor, who decried what he called President Buhari’s “Nothernisation of Nigeria,” said “appointments made by the President so far negate the principle of federal character and it appears the unity in diversity of Nigeria is being taken for granted by the President.”

Medical doctor arrested for carrying out abortion in Edo

Men of the Edo State Police Command have arrested the Managing Director of the Ofure Royal Medical Centre located at Upper Uwa Street, Benin City, Dr. Omokhomion Kingsley, for allegedly conducting abortion at his clinic.

Dr. Omokhomion was apprehended by police officers from the Zonal Criminal Investigation Bureau, Zone 5’ police headquarters, Benin City, following complaint that a woman’s pregnancy was terminated.

It was learnt that police operatives brought a patient disguised as a pregnant woman demanding to abort her pregnancy.

The doctor alongside four nurses were arrested while attempting to terminate the pregnancy.

Goat Gives Birth to a Kid With Six Legs (Photos)

A goat in Muzuwerani Kwa Ndomo, Kilishi County, Kenya gave birth to a kid with two fore legs and four hind legs.

Accordng to the owner, Omar, this is the third delivery for the mother goat.

"The goat has given birth twice before to normal twins. However, when it came to the third delivery, I was shocked to see the kid having six legs and the reproductive organ located beneath the legs

"It uses the same organ to pass both urine and excrement." he said.

South Africa's rand slips as US Fed hike bets return

Gas field discovered off Egypt the 'largest ever'

Italian energy giant ENI has announced the discovery of the "largest ever" offshore natural gas field in the Mediterranean inside Egypt's territorial waters.

The discovery, confirmed by Egypt's oil ministry on Sunday, could hold a potential 850 billion cubic metres of lean gas in an area of about 100 square kilometres, it said in a statement.

The so-called Zohr project is "the largest gas discovery ever made in Egypt and in the Mediterranean Sea," it said, adding the find would meet Egypt's own natural gas demands for decades.

The Anglican Bishop of Minna Diocese, Rev. Daniel Yisa, on Sunday, cautioned Nigerians against attacking President Muhammadu Buhari over his appointments.

According to him, the president entered no agreement on appointments.

He said such had given him the liberty to choose people he believed could do the job.

Yisa, at a press conference to mark the Silver Jubilee anniversary of Minna Diocese of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, said “you do not know the kind of contributions these persons (appointees) have made to the success of the party (APC) and, or to the individual that won elections.”

SA economy is ill, admits Zuma

President Jacob Zuma on Sunday acknowledged that the South African economy was “sick” as he launched the first unit of Eskom’s new Medupi power station in Limpopo.


Zuma threw down the gauntlet to labour and business to put the country first as the domestic and global economies faced headwinds. “Should we not come together and recognise the economy is sick? You cannot say it is business as usual when the economy is sick… Should we not talk about business and labour tightening the belt?” asked Zuma.

The country’s economy moved close to recession, which is a drop in gross domestic product (GDP) in two consecutive quarters, in the second quarter with GDP contracting by 1.3 percent after growing by 1.3 percent in the previous quarter.

Commercial transporters clash with FRSC over Sept 1 introduction of speed limiter

A major crisis that may disrupt road transportation in Nigeria for a long period if not averted by the Presidency has broken out between commercial transporters in the country and the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC.

The crisis of confidence between the two parties arises over the decision by the commission to introduce speed limiter technology on commercial vehicles with effect from September 1 this year.

N35,000 for device, N1,000 for installation

A document, which was exclusively obtained by our correspondent last night, indicated that the FRSC is working in league with a private Nigerian firm to enforce the controversial deal, which would require each vehicle owner to buy the device for N35,000 and pay additional N1,000 for installation.

109 persons arrested for crossing expressway

NO fewer than 109 persons were, weekend, arrested by men of Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of Lagos State Police Command, and officials of Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI, for crossing the expressway at Ketu Bus Stop, along Ikorodu road, instead of using the pedestrian bridge.

The arrest, according to Mr. Olatunji Disu, RRS Commander, is to instil discipline towards the use of pedestrian bridges in the state to prevent loss of lives on highways and ease the free-flow of traffic.

Among those arrested were 102 men and seven women.

In another development, fleeing robbers, weekend, opened fire on a team of policemen attached to RRS in Ikeja area of Lagos.

Congregation chases pastor from church for impregnating member

There was commotion on Sunday at the United Methodist Church, Mafoluku, in the Oshodi area of Lagos as members of the church rejected their pastor and chased him away for allegedly impregnating his housemaid.

It was learnt that the pastor, Barkuma Andrew, was stopped from leading the church seven months ago when the housemaid, who was also a member of the church, Grace, had complications after aborting the pregnancy.

Andrew lives with his wife, children, wife’s cousin, Favour, and Grace in a three-bedroomed flat on the church premises.

Vigilance group uncovers joint for naked female dancers

An Asaba-based vigilance group has uncovered a joint where female teenagers dance naked and has arrested the operator of the joint.

The joint, located in Asaba, hosts bizarre activities, including pornographic shows, especially at weekends.

Confirming the arrest of the operator, the vigilance group boss, Chukwudi Nnamdi, said the suspect was arrested last week Thursday and handed over to the police.

Men impersonate CAC pastor, defraud restaurant manager

The police have arraigned one Joshua Kolawole and Ademola Adeleke for allegedly impersonating a Christ Apostolic Church pastor and defrauding a restaurateur in Yaba, Lagos.

The suspects were arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court, Yaba, Lagos.

Kolawole and Adeleke were said to have defrauded a restaurant manager, one Kehinde Sulaimon on August 6, 2015.

On the day of the incident, Kolawole was said to have disguised as a pastor, while Sulaimon posed as another victim.

US embassy attends to visa complaints on Hangouts

Three officials of the United States Embassy in Nigeria, of Friday, interacted with Nigerians from different parts of the country for an hour and three minutes. They spoke on what applicants should do or avoid when processing the US visa.

The live show was not a television programme. Recognising the growing influence of digital media, the visa officers took to Google Hangouts to provide answers to questions bordering applicants while busting various myths around visa processing.

The officers said they took to Google Hangouts to help applicants relate with the embassy directly instead of patronising touts and agents.

EFCC sets up four-man panel on Diezani

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has commenced a full investigation into the activities of the immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

It was learnt on Sunday that the commission constituted a four-member committee of crack detectives to probe all the NNPC accounts which were supervised by the former minister.

It was learnt that the committee was led by a Superintendent of Police, who was seconded to the commission.

Boko Haram now in Lagos, Enugu –DSS

The Department of State Services has arrested 20 suspected Boko Haram commanders in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Plateau and Gombe states.

The suspects, who were arrested between July 8 and August 25, 2015, include the masterminds of the suicide attacks in Potiskum, Kano, Zaria, and Jos.

The DSS in a statement by an official, Tony Opuiyo, on Sunday in Abuja, said those arrested were notable commanders and frontline members of the notorious group from different parts of the country.

The statement noted that the group’s new pattern of movement and spread was caused by the pressure being put on it by security forces in its core areas of strength in the North-East.

Boko Haram attacks Borno village on horseback, kills 68

At least 68 people were killed while several others were injured when members of Boko Haram sect invaded Baanu Village of Nganzai local government area of Borno state.

A resident of the area, Yuram Musa who fled to Maiduguri said the insurgents who came on horses at about 8:30 pm on Friday started shooting sporadically.

He said, “we have to fled into the bush and hide and after they left we return back to pick some of our belongings. I counted 68 corpses some were slaughtered while others were shot. The number of those killed are worrisome as the corpses littered the village”

Don’t take God for granted, Amaechi tells Wike

Former Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday, warned his successor, Mr. Nyesom Wike, against taking God for granted.

Amaechi also said he decided to shun the judicial commission of inquiry set up by Wike because the panel was illegal.

The ex-governor, while speaking with his supporters and members of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, stated that he would only appear before the commission of inquiry if Wike complied with the law.

Amaechi stated that the governor had already adjudged him to be guilty in the presence of members of the panel and vowed that he would go to court over the matter.

Appointments: Buhari, APC move to pacify S’East

There were indications on Saturday that President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress had begun moves to compensate the South-East for not getting any appointments so far in the current administration.

Our correspondent reliably gathered that some states in the geopolitical zone might get more than one ministerial slot.

The Presidency and the APC sources, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, also justified the appointments made by Buhari on Thursday.

A top member of the party said the President was not unmindful of criticisms that greeted the alleged lopsided appointments.

The Awoyaya faction had allegedly been locked in a leadership tussle with the faction of the same gang based in Ajah area, which has resulted in a number of clashes.

Revealed: Nigeria-bound Wanted ISIS Chief Was Coming on Special Invitation

According to a shocking report , the ISIS leader, Ahmed Al-Assir, who was arrested in Lebanon on his way to Nigeria lately, was reportedly coming on the invitation of a foreign company operating in the country.

Police rescue pregnant teenagers, babies from Enugu ‘maternity home’

Five pregnant girls and nine babies, under one year old, have been recovered from a maternity home, identified as Daughters of Divine Home Pro-live, located on Aria Road, by Cemetery axis of Enugu metropolis.

The recovery followed information received by the operatives of the Central Police Station, Enugu, who stormed the home on August 21.

According to police source, the victims are helping the operatives of the Anti-Child Trafficking Unit of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department, CIID, in its investigations.
