Patrons and store owners were left rattled after a gun battle broke out between police and suspected robbers at the Waterstone Village Shopping Centre on Monday.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said Somerset West police officers arrested two suspects at the shopping centre after receiving information about a stolen vehicle parked at the mall.
“Upon arrival officers saw three occupants inside the vehicle and two attempted to flee. The vehicle’s driver was arrested and the other suspect ran towards the R44 and turned around and pointed a gun at the police.”
Van Wyk said officers then shot the suspect in the arm. He was arrested and is currently under police guard in hospital. The other suspect is still at large.
The centre’s security manager, Eugene Steyn, said:
“I still need to view the CCTV footage to see what happened. Luckily no one was hurt.”
An employee at the centre, who didn’t want to be named, said it was not the first time there had been shootings at the centre.
“The last time they robbed Pick n Pay and today we heard gunshots. It is not safe to be here because you never know when you’ll get caught in a crossfire.”
Meanwhile, a security guard was held up at gunpoint when he collected cash from a store at Kenilworth Centre.
Van Wyk said: “The suspects held the security officer at gunpoint and removed the money box he was holding.”
The robbers then fled the scene with the box. “It is further alleged that the suspects opened the box in one of the parking lots at the centre only to discover it was empty.”
The empty box was abandoned and the robbers fled the scene in a white Ford Bantam bakkie.
