16 injured in Pretoria accident

Johannesburg - Sixteen people were injured when a bakkie crashed into the back of a taxi on the N4 near Watermeyer Road, Pretoria, on Saturday, paramedics said.

"Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found three people still trapped in the wreckage of the taxi with critical injuries, thirteen others sustained injuries ranging from serious to minor," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"While the fire department used the Jaws of Life to extricate the critically wounded, the paramedics had to clamber into the wreckage to stabilise them."

After the injured were treated, one critically wounded person was airlifted to a specialised facility for further treatment.

The injured still on scene were stabilised on scene and then taken to various hospitals.

The cause of the accident would be investigated by police.
