Barack Obama has failed Africa
Last Friday, the first Kenyan-American President of the United States returned to the country of his father’s birth. He arrived in Nairobi amid tight security (Kenya’s airspace was shut down). He was greeted by his half-sister Auma Obama as well as President Uhuru Kenyatta. Kenyatta had been facing charges of crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for allegedly stoking ethnic violence after Kenya’s 2007 presidential elections.
The violence cost the lives of 1,200 people and displaced 600,000. But, the case against Kenyatta, son of Kenya’s founding father, was dropped in 2014, because the ICC could not bring a case against him—they accused his government of obstructing their investigation. This thorny issue had delayed Obama’s visit.

Sex abuse payouts docked after victims commit crimes
Hundreds of sex abuse victims have had their compensation payments reduced after committing crime themselves, according to new figures.
A total of 12,665 people who suffered abuse as children or vulnerable adults had been awarded compensation by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA), an executive agency sponsored by the Ministry of Justice, since 2010.

The broadcaster said that in the year to June 2015, half of the 27 people who had payments reduced had convictions for drink, drug, theft or property offences, while eight were prosecuted for violence.

Rand falls on Fed delay
The rand weakened to a fresh 14-year low on Thursday after the Reserve Bank wrongly second-guessed the intentions of the Federal Reserve Bank to announce the start of monetary policy tightening in September.
The monetary policy committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank hiked the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6 percent last week, partly in anticipation of an early interest rate increase by the Fed.
Now the Fed is expected to start raising in September.
Unfortunately by then, when the Reserve Bank moves in response, it will be off a higher base as a result of its miscalculation of the market.
The US expanded at a faster pace in the second quarter, with gross domestic product rising 2.3 percent, while the labour market also showed signs of improving.

How fifth columnists in Nigerian military leaked operational plans to Boko Haram – ex-Defence Chief
Alex Badeh, the immediate past commander of the Nigerian military, has revealed that the effectiveness of the fight against the militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, was greatly hampered by fifth columnists within the military who leaked sensitive information and operational plans to the terrorist sect.

He said the activities of saboteurs within the military led to the unnecessary deaths of many soldiers and officers who unknowingly walked into ambushes laid by Boko Haram who had prior knowledge of troops movement.

Africa to Obama: Mind your own business
United States President Barack Obama is the most admired foreign leader in Africa because he has ancestral roots in our continent.
This is partly the reason his ill-informed and stereotypical admonitions of our leaders attracted cheers from a large section of our elite class.
But it is also because we African elites have internalised the ideology of our conquerors that presents us as inferior, inadequate, and incapable of self-government.

US cop charged with murder after deadly traffic-stop
Cincinnati - A University of Cincinnati police officer who shot a motorist during a traffic stop over a missing front license plate has been indicted on murder charges and a prosecutor said on Wednesday that the officer "purposely killed him”.
Prosecutor Joe Deters announced the grand jury indictment at a news conference to discuss developments in the investigation into the July 19 shooting of 43-year-old motorist Samuel DuBose by Officer Ray Tensing.
DuBose's death comes amid months of national scrutiny of police dealings with African-Americans, especially those killed by officers. DuBose was black. Tensing is white. Authorities haven't indicated whether race was a part of the investigation.
Authorities have said Tensing spotted a car driven by DuBose and missing the front license plate, which is required by Ohio law. They say Tensing stopped the car and a struggle ensued after DuBose refused to provide a driver's license and get out of the car.
Tensing has said he was dragged by the car and forced to shoot at DuBose. He fired one shot, striking DuBose in the head.
