Reason: Her family’s newly approved private university, Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, Delta State, which was among the few private institutions recently approved by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC), made a formal presentation to the Delta State government.
It will be recalled that she was one of the most respected bankers in Nigeria. But she suffered a reversal of fate when she was hit by the Sanusi Lamido Sanusi-led Central Bank of Nigeria Tsunami, following allegation of financial recklessness.
Consequently, the influential banker was forced to crawl back into her shell, therefore becoming a rarity on the social scenes.
But that is now history, as she has many reasons to smile again. She has now bounced bank, as she is heavily involved in a lot of philanthropy gestures. Her platform of service to humanity is the Michael and Cecilia Ibru Foundation founded in 2006.
Society Happenings gathered the Foundation has taken her around the nook and crannies of Nigeria, donating cash and giving scholarships to students from less privileged backgrounds.
Ibru, who holds a B.Sc. in Sociology from the University of London and a Masters of Philosophy from the School of Oriental and African Studies in 1977, joined the Ibru organisation as Project Director.
Two years after, she was appointed International Finance Coordinator, a position she held until 1990. She began working with the defunct Oceanic Bank in 1990 as General Manager and was promoted Managing Director and CEO seven years after.
