Jailed Al-Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fahmy pardoned in Egypt

Jailed Al-Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fahmy has reportedly received a presidential pardon in Egypt.

The President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, has pardoned Mr Fahmy, a presidential official said.

Mr Fahmy, a Canadian national, was jailed alongside Australian journalist Peter Greste and Egyptian Baher Mohamed in December 2013, on allegations they aided the Muslim Brotherhood and that their reporting was “damaging to national security”.

The three men were sentenced to three years in prison in a retrial last month, but Mr Greste was tried in absentia after he was deported from Egypt in February.

Mr Fahmy was facing a retrial on those charges.

He was one of a group of 100 prisoners pardoned by Mr Sisi, including women activists Sana Seif and Yara Sallam, Egypt news agency MENA reported.

Mr Greste and Mr Mohamed were reportedly not included in the pardon.
