The Department of State Services and the military have concluded plans to launch a manhunt for the killers of seven DSS operatives who were gunned down last Wednesday by vandals in Ikorodu, Lagos.
It was gathered on Sunday that a joint operation by the two security services would be launched this week to fish out the killers, who were believed to be militants-turned -oil -pipeline vandals.
Sources informed our correspondent that the manhunt might take the security operatives to riverine communities in Ondo, Delta and Bayelsa states, where the suspects might be hiding.
It was learnt that two operatives, who escaped the attack, had briefed their superiors and given detailed information on what led to the killing of their colleagues.
A source explained that the leadership of the DSS was not happy about the incident and it was determined to apprehend the killers.
The source said, “The authorities of the service are not happy with the killing of our operatives and they are determined to apprehend the perpetrators, no matter the cost and no matter how long it takes.
“Already, a joint operation with the military has been initiated to get the criminals who murdered our personnel in cold blood.”
It was learnt that the current leadership of the DSS would not overlook the killing of the operatives as was done by the past administration which allowed members of the Ombatse cult in Alakyo, Nasarawa State, to go scot-free after killing 10 DSS operatives in 2013.
“The current leadership will not tolerate the killings of DSS officials and there is no way the service would allow the murderers of our men to escape the law, like they did in Nasarawa in 2013,” another source said.
It was learnt that nine DSS operatives were on a random surveillance of Ishawo community in Ikorodu when they were accosted by the armed militants who gunned them down and carted away their remains.
But two operatives survived the attack and managed to escape from their assailants.
The DSS could not be reached for comment as it had yet to appoint a spokesperson.
