The Global Law and Order report released on yesterday ranks Kenya number 118 out of 141 countries.
It says most people feel unsafe to walk alone at night, Liberia is worst at number 141.
The report shows the says Liberia was surveyed at the beginning of last year’s Ebola outbreak adding that “barely more than one in three Liberians (35 per cent) say they feel safe walking alone”.
The worst countries in Africa include South Africa number (138), South Sudan (136), Botswana (134), Uganda (131), Nigeria (123) and Zambia at number 122.
Rwanda is the most secure place in Africa and number 21 in the world.
Places in Africa that are safer than Kenya include Egypt at position 31, Niger (41), Ethiopia (46), Burkina Faso (53), Sudan (56), Somalia (72), Ghana (89), Tanzania (99) and Burundi at number 110.
Those polled were asked on whether they have confidence in the local police in the places they live.
They were asked whether they feel safe walking alone at night and if in the last year their money or property were stolen.
The survey was done on telephone and face-to-face interviews.
About 1,000 adults aged 15 and above were interviewed. Among the 141 countries polled, Singapore was ranked safest with 91 per cent of its people feeling safe walking alone at night followed by Uzbekistan and Hong Kong.
“At least six in 10 people worldwide said they have confidence in the police at (63 per cent),” reads the report.
Fewer than one in six (15 per cent) said they had money or property stolen in the past year.
It says a strong relationship between people’s answers and external measures is related to the economic and social development.
This, the report says reinforces how crime rates can suppress social cohesion and negatively affect economic performance.
