Two dead after building under construction collapses in Kajiado

Two workers died while four others escaped unhurt when a building under construction collapsed in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado county on Sunday morning.

Paul Nyalombe, 32, and 21-year-old George Omondi were sleeping in the building when it collapsed at about 3am.

Wycliffe Omondi, who survived the incident, said he joined the construction project in June after clearing form four in 2014.

Omondi said they had started work on the six floor last Friday when they noticed the building shaking and alerted the others.

He said two people usually spent their nights in the building, while he and the others, who escaped, slept in a mabati house behind the structure.

He told the Star they tried to save their colleagues but were too late.

National Disaster Management boss Pius Masaai asked residents to keep off the scene as the debris is cleared to prevent accidents.

His team took part in the operation alongside the police, the NYS and the Kenya Red Cross Society.

“If we need assistance from the public we are going to inform you but as for now let us keep off the area," he said.

County Roads executive Dickson Ntikoisa said they needed to hire an excavator as the county lacks one.

“I cannot comment for now, the building was passed by the county government but many private developers constructing private or residential houses are flouting regulations, endangering lives,” he said.

National Construction Authority architect Stephen Muilu said the contractor, whom he said is registered with the institution, will be held liable for the "illegal" work.

He added that the company involved, Roji construction, will be held liable for the deaths and the collapse.

It emerged that county physical planner Isaac Parashina had stopped the building's construction following complaints by the area chief.
